DATING ROCK ART

Relative and absolute dating are used to

access the age of rock art.  Relative dating

involves such things as cation (comparison

of differences in rates of patination),

superimposition of images and geological events

such as floods and volcanic eruptions.

Absolute dating involves such things as

artifacts found in association with the

petroglyphs or pictographs and chronometric

dating that involves association with time

periods, or ranges of dates, such as migrations.

Although not strictly about rock art,

the links below provides a good summary

 of these techniques.

The forum on this site invites you to share your experiences with this element in the understanding of rock art.
