 our ancestors left traces of themselves on

 durable rock surfaces.  Some times 

it was painted,sometimes inscribed, some

 times createdby the baring of subsurface soil.

     Petroicons were created both in surface 

and cave locations.   They were created for 

a large variety of reasons.
